Worley scores Rotterdam hydrogen gig from Shell

A unit of the Hague-based LNG giant Shell has awarded Australia’s Worley a services contract to support the development of a new hydrogen plant in Rotterdam.

Worley said in a statement on Tuesday it won the contract from Shell Nederland Verkoopmaatschappij.

The new 200 megawatt electrolysis-based plant will be powered by renewable energy from an offshore windfarm that is currently in development, it said.

Once complete, the green hydrogen plant will be one of the largest commercial green
hydrogen production facilities in the world, according to Worley.

Operations should start by 2023 and the plant would produce 50,000 – 60,000 kilograms of green hydrogen per day.

Shell would initially use the green hydrogen to decarbonize the company’s nearby refinery in Pernis and support the industrial use of hydrogen in the heavy transportation industry, Worley said.

Under the contract, Worley will provide early engineering services for the green hydrogen plant including integration with other assets such as offshore wind, pipelines, electrical grids and Shell’s Pernis refinery.

Morever, Worley said it would execute the services from its offices in The Hague, with support from the company’s global hydrogen subject-matter experts and global integrated delivery team in India.
