Hyundai Samho delivers LNG Canada tanker

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has delivered a new liquefied natural gas carrier which will serve the Shell-led LNG Canada project in Kitimat.

Hyundai Samho delivered the 174,000-cbm Diamond Gas Crystal on May 31, NYK said in a statement.

Diamond LNG Shipping 5, a joint venture consisting of NYK, MISC’s Asia LNG Transport Dua, and Mitsubishi Corporation, owns the vessel.

In addition, Diamond Gas International, a unit of Mitsubishi Corporation who also has a stake in the LNG Canada project, will charter the vessel for a period of about 17 years, NYK said.

The vessel will ship volumes from LNG Canada but prior to that, it would serve other plants around the world, NYK said.

Diamond Gas Crystal features WinGD’s dual-fuel slow-speed X-DF propulsion.

The 297 meters long vessel also has a reliquefaction system that can use reliquefied excess boil-off gas and return it to the cargo tank.

The giant LNG Canada project, worth more than $30 billion, includes the construction of 14 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) export capacity from the first two trains, with the potential to expand to four trains in the future.

Shell expects the first LNG shipment from the plant in British Columbia in the middle of the decade.
