Russia’s Sakhalin terminal ships milestone LNG cargo

Russia’s Sakhalin-2 LNG export terminal, operated by Gazprom, has shipped a milestone cargo from its facility in the port of Prigorodnoye.

The 145,000-cbm LNG carrier Energy Advance loaded the 2000th cargo on May 29, according to terminal operator Sakhalin Energy.

Japan’s Tokyo Gas bought the cargo. The LNG importer, along with another Japanese company − Tokyo Electric, also purchased the first LNG cargo from the Prigorodnoye terminal back in 2009.

To remind, the Sakhalin-2 LNG facility produced and shipped record 11.6 million tonnes of LNG last year. This is equivalent to 178.6 standard cargoes.

Japan, the world’s largest LNG importer, is also the biggest buyer of these volumes.

Based on data as of the end of 2020, 51.6 percent of Sakhalin LNG volumes landed in Japan, followed by Taiwan (17.4 percent), South Korea (16.3 percent) and China (14.1 percent), Sakhalin Energy said.

Since the start-up of the LNG plant in 2009, Sakhalin Energy produced and shipped about 130 million tonnes of LNG at the Prigorodnoye asset, the firm said.

Sakhalin Energy’s shareholders include operator Gazprom, major partner Shell, and Japan’s Mitsui and Co., and Mitsubishi Corporation.
