TotalEnergies, Novatek to work on slashing LNG emissions

Russia’s Novatek and French partner TotalEnergies have agreed to work on reducing emissions from two Arctic LNG export projects as part of a deal revealed on Thursday.

Novatek and TotalEnergies are partners in both the Yamal LNG project and the Arctic LNG 2 development. The French firm also has a 19.4 percent stake in Novatek.

The duo signed a memorandum of understanding on Thursday which includes decarbonization but also hydrogen and renewables, Novatek said in a statement.

“The parties intend to cooperate on reducing greenhouse gas emission at joint projects by implementing carbon capture and storage technologies and utilizing renewable energy sources at joint LNG projects,” it said.

In addition, the memorandum considers the production and usage of hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel, as well as the marketing of carbon-neutral products including LNG, Novatek said.

Specifically, the duo will work on technical solutions to improve the efficiency of power generation for LNG production, including using waste heat utilization technologies.

The memorandum also includes developing and deploying technologies to convert gas turbine equipment to hydrogen fuel.

Furthermore, the duo also agreed to work on solutions for the construction of wind power generation facilities and other renewable energy sources to reduce the carbon footprint of LNG projects.

Novatek has also signed a share purchase deal with TotalEnergies under which the latter will take a stake in its two LNG transshipment complexes.

TotalEnergies purchased a 10 percent participation interest in Novatek’s unit Arctic Transshipment that will operate the complexes currently under construction in the Kamchatka and Murmansk regions.
