RS approves floating LNG power plant

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) said it has granted approval in principle to a floating LNG power plant design.

The St. Petersburg-based classification society said in a statement this would be the first floating storage regasification and power (FSRP) built and operated in Russia.

Moreover, the floating LNG storage facility would have a capacity of about 180,000 cubic meters, RS said.

Regasified LNG would go to the gas turbine unit that would generate electricity for onward distribution to onshore clients, it said.

In addition, the “highly efficient” LNG power plant will have a total power generation capacity of 356 MW.

Such units will be in demand in remote areas where it is difficult or not possible at all to build onshore gas pipelines as well as shore-based power plants, according to RS.

“In particular, the FSRP can operate in harsh conditions at temperatures down to -40 C,” RS said.

The classification society did not provide any additional information on the project.

Worth mentioning here, RS signed a new cooperation deal last week with French LNG containment specialist GTT to further advance the safety and efficiency of new LNG transportation technologies.
