Shell sells carbon-neutral LPG cargo to Japan’s Astomos Energy

LNG giant Shell said it has sold a carbon-neutral liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cargo to Japan’s importer Astomos Energy.

According to Shell, this very large gas carrier (VLGC)-size cargo could be the world’s first such carbon-neutral LPG shipment.

With this deal, Astomos Energy would provide carbon-neutral LPG to Japanese household and business customers, enabling them to decarbonise their energy use, Shell said.

Shell said it would use credits from its global portfolio of nature-based projects to offset lifecycle CO2e emissions generated across the value chain from production to consumption but also transportation.

Moreover, each carbon offset is subject to a third-party verification process and represents the avoidance or removal of one tonne of CO2e, Shell said.

The Japan LP Gas Association says there are about 24 million households in the country consuming LPG but users also include industry and transport as well.
