Doeksen to start fueling Dutch ferries with bio-LNG

Dutch ferry operator Rederij Doeksen will start fueling its two new ferries with bio-LNG in 2023 as part of a deal the firm signed with compatriot SFP.

Sustainable Fuel Plant (SFP) plans to invest about 30 million euros ($36.3 million) in a new bio-LNG facility in Harlingen.

Doeksen will buy some of the volumes from the plant, expected to go online in 2023, to fuel its LNG-powered ferries Willem de Vlamingh and Willem Barentsz.

The ferry operator has previously said it planned to fuel the new ships in the future with bio-LNG or LBG.

To remind, Strategic Marine shipyard in Vietnam built both of the ships while Doeksen completed final outfitting and commissioning.

The BMT-designed 70 meters long LNG catamarans feature Rolls-Royce twin MTU gas engines.

In addition, the 16-cylinder mtu series 4000 gas engines produce an output of 1492 kW, and the vessels can reach a top speed of 14 knots.

The two vessels have the capacity to transport up to 600 passengers and 64 cars across the Wadden Sea.
