New Fortress secures approvals for Mexico LNG terminal

Wes Edens-led New Fortress Energy has received several approvals related to its LNG import terminal in the port of Pichilingue in Mexico’s Baja California Sur state.

The project near La Paz includes the construction of an ISOFlex LNG import facility
and a 135 MW power plant, according to New Fortress.

Mexico’s energy regulator CRE said in a notice dated June 14 it granted NFE Pacífico Lap, a unit of New Fortress, permission to store natural gas in a floating unit in the port of Pichilingue.

Moreover, the NFE Pacífico Lap also won approval to distribute natural gas via ISO containers as well as a regasification permit.

New Fortress chief executive Wes Edens said on May 7 during the company’s first-quarter conference call that the firm had expected the La Paz facility to go online “in the next 60 days or less.”

Also, the firm revealed a deal in March to supply LNG to a unit of Mexico’s state-run electric utility, the Federal Electricity Commission.

Under the deal, NFE would provide about 250,000-500,000 gallons of LNG (20,000-40,000 MMBtu) per day to CFEnergia from the receiving and regasification terminal in the port of Pichilingue.

In addition to the Mexico facility, the US firm also plans to launch its LNG terminal in Puerto Sandino in western Nicaragua in the coming weeks.
