Novatek says first plane lands at Arctic LNG 2 airport

Russia’s Novatek said the first plane has landed at the Utrenniy airport built specifically for the Arctic LNG 2 project on the Gydan Peninsula.

Russian airline Utair has operated the flight on the Tyumen to Utrenniy route, Novatek said on Thursday.

The Utrenniy Airport has a 1,550 meters long runway built for year-round transportation of
rotational personnel to the Utrenneye field. It can receive and service small and medium-sized aircraft.

According to Novatek, planes should replace helicopters for flights from Sabetta to the Utrenniy airport which will significantly reduce the air transportation dependence on weather conditions, increase the flight safety level, as well as optimize the schedules for mobilizing personnel at the project.

The Arctic 2 project includes the construction of three LNG trains with a capacity of 6.6 mtpa, each, using gravity-based structure platforms.

Novatek expects to launch the first LNG train in 2023, with trains 2 and 3 to follow in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Besides operator Novatek, the project partners include TotalEnergies, CNPC, CNOOC, and the consortium of Mitsui and JOGMEC.
