South Korea’s DSME to build six LNG-powered containerships

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering will build six LNG-powered ultra-large containerships as part of a contract revealed on Monday.

DSME said in a filing to the stock exchange it would deliver the LNG-powered vessels to an unnamed European owner by the end of 2024.

The deal has a price tag of 1.12 trillion won ($989 million), DSME said.

The shipbuilder did not reveal any additional information.

Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd has last year ordered six ultra-large LNG-powered container vessels at the Korean yard for about $1 billion. The German liner said then it would take delivery of the 23,500+ TEU vessels between April and December 2023.

Shipbuilding sources tell LNG Prime that Hapag-Lloyd could be behind this order as well, but we could not confirm this by the time this article was published.

DSME has this year secured orders for 33 ships worth about $4.71 billion.

These include very large crude carriers, LPG carriers, containerships, one LNG carrier, one FPSO, and one wind turbine installation vessel.
