China’s Sinopec in Qingdao LNG milestone

China’s state-controlled energy giant Sinopec said it has received a milestone cargo at its Qingdao LNG import terminal in Shandong province.

Sinopec said on Thursday the 2008-built LNG carrier Amur River, owned by Dynagas, recently delivered about 70,000 tons of liquefied natural gas to the Qingdao facility.

Gazprom-chartered Amur River previously loaded the cargo at Russia’s Sakhalin-2 LNG export terminal, its AIS data shows.

With this shipment, the Qingdao terminal has received a total of 30 million tons of LNG since start of operations in 2014, according to Sinopec.

The terminal with a capacity of 6 million tons “ranks first in terms of unloading efficiency in China, which continuously enhances its unloading and storage capabilities to meet the increasing natural gas demand, ensuring the supply of clean energy for households,” Sinopec said.

Worth mentioning here, the energy giant has earlier this year entered into a ten-year LNG supply deal with Qatar Petroleum.

Under the SPA, QP will supply 2 million tons per year of LNG to Sinopec’s terminals from 2022.

Chinese LNG imports have been steadily increasing in 2021 on strong demand from the power generation and industrial sectors.

The country should overtake Japan as the world’s top LNG importer this year.
