Terntank gets Swedish grant to install batteries on LNG-powered duo

Sweden’s Terntank said it has secured funds to install battery packs on two of its LNG and LBG-powered product tankers currently under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard.

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency through Klimatklivet awarded the grant for its hybrid solution, Terntank said.

The 15,000-dwt newbuildings will have a hybrid battery system and shore power connections that will help eliminate port emissions from the auxiliary machines.

In addition, the battery pack will provide 420 kW of power.

Terntank says the tankers will get shore power supply in the Energy Port in Gothenburg, a new development in the Port of Gothenburg which will be ready in 2023.

This initiative also received a grant from Klimatklivet for about $1.2 million.

The port estimates that shoreside power at the Energy Port would reduce carbon emissions from vessels by 1,800 tonnes per year.

To remind, Jinling held a keel-laying ceremony for the first Terntank hybrid tanker on January 25.

Following delivery later this year and in January 2022, both vessels will serve Finland’s NEOT in the Baltic Sea region as part of a charter deal revealed last year.

With these vessels, the Finnish oil and bioproducts supplier will have four Tertank-chartered LNG-powered tankers in its fleet.

Moreover, the two hybrid newbuilds are an upgraded version of Terntank’s AVIC series.

Kongsberg’s Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine designed the two ships in collaboration with Terntank.
