Spanish ferry operator Balearia is preparing to put in use its converted LNG-powered ferry Martin i Soler on the Barcelona-Ibiza route.
Baleria said in a statement on Tuesday the converted vessel would start working on June 30.
To remind, Portugal’s West Sea shipyard has performed the conversion works on the vessel which included installing the 360-cbm LNG tank supplied by Cryonorm in December.
Moreover, Balearia says the tank would enable the vessel to travel about 1000 nautical miles on LNG.
The 165 meters long ferry with a capacity for 1,200 passengers and 560 cars now features MAK dual-fuel engines.
Martin i Soler joins four other Balearia’s converted ferries but also three LNG-powered newbuilds. Baleria says the conversion works on the last vessel, Hedy Lamarr, would start later this year.
The firm aims to have a fleet of nine LNG-powered vessels by the end of 2021 with a total investment of 380 million euros ($452 million).
