MAN to power Hapag-Lloyd’s LNG giants

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering will install six MAN ME-GI engines onboard Hapag-Lloyd’s recently ordered ultra-large LNG-powered container vessels.

To remind, Hapag-Lloyd exercised an option for six additional 23,500+ TEU vessels boosting the total order at DSME to twelve LNG-powered ULCVs.

Following this new move, DSME has ordered six MAN B&W 11G95ME-GI Mk10.5 main engines from Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions.

Hapag-Lloyd also chose the ME-GI engine for the first six vessels.

Volkswagen’s MAN said the engines would be built in Korea. They offer the option of operating on LNG or conventional fuel, meeting Tier III emission standards through selective catalytic reduction.

The first engine delivery will take place in May 2022.

In addition, DSME will deliver the first six container vessels between April-December 2023, while the new ships will join Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet by end-2024.
