Samsung bags contract for LNG carrier trio

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries said it has secured an order to build three liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

Samsung will build the 180,000-cbm vessels for an Oceania-based owner.

The yard did not reveal the name of the company behind the order in a stock exchange announcement.

Moreover, the contract has a price tag of 654.5 billion won ($580 million), the shipbuilder said.

Samsung added it would deliver the ships by February 2024.

Brokers reported that Denmark’s Celsius Shipping could be the owner behind the new order. Celsius has already four 180,000-cbm vessels on order at Samsung.

Including the newest contract, Samsung won orders more than $6.5 billion worth so far this year, achieving 71 percent of this year’s order target.

Samsung has in May this year revealed a contract for two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers for an Oceania-based owner.

Maria Angelicoussis-led Maran Gas had exercised options for these two LNG carriers, according to brokers.
