Japan’s Osaka Gas gets first carbon-neutral LNG cargo from Shell

Japan’s city gas supplier and LNG importer Osaka Gas said it has received its first carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas cargo at the Senboku terminal.

Shell delivered the carbon-neutral cargo from the 6.7 mtpa Brunei plant where it holds a stake.

Moreover, Osaka Gas purchased the cargo as part of a deal it signed with Shell Eastern Trading, the Japanese firm said in a statement on Tuesday.

Under the deal, Shell would use nature-based credits to compensate for the emissions associated with production, transport, and end-use of the cargo, Osaka Gas said.

Osaka Gas said it would start supplying carbon-neutral city gas to the customers of its unit Daigas Energy as of August 1.

In addition, the Japanese firm will supply carbon-neutral gas to several other gas utilities as well.

Shell has previously delivered several carbon-neutral LNG shipments in Asia, but also from the US to Europe, and the latest from Oman.
