Hyundai to install MAN ME-GA engines on six LNG carriers

South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries will install MAN ME-GA engines onboard six 174,000-cbm LNG carriers which will go on charter to a unit of Shell.

HHI-EMD, a unit of Hyundai, has placed the order for the low-speed ME-GA engine, the latest addition to MAN Energy Solutions’ dual-fuel portfolio.

According to Germany’s MAN, this marks the world’s first order for the engine.

The firm said in June it had won the first order for its new ME-GA dual-fuel engine from Hyundai but it did not disclose any additional information.

Under the contract, HHI-EMD has ordered two 5G70ME-GA10.5 engines for each of the six 174,000-cbm LNG carriers.

Korea Line and Pan Ocean own two of these vessels, each, while Knutsen and investors advised by J.P. Morgan Asset Management own one ship, each.

Hyundai will build the vessels in Korea. Following delivery, they would all go on charter to Shell Singapore.

MAN expects delivery of the first engine in August 2022, with the final unit arriving during the following year.

In addition, MAN said that each of the engines would feature its proprietary exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system for emissions reduction.
