South Korea’s Samsung Heavy awards new LNG tank job to GTT

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has awarded a new contract to French LNG containment giant GTT.

GTT said in a statement on Monday it would design the tanks for three 180,000-cbm LNG tankers.

Moreover, the new vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment system.

GTT added Samsung Heavy would deliver the vessels to an unidentified owner between the second quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024.

The firm did not disclose any additional information.

Samsung Heavy revealed this order in a stock exchange announcement last week.

The shipbuilder said it would build three LNG carriers for an Oceania-based owner for about $580 million.

Samsung Heavy also did not reveal any additional information but several brokers reported after the announcement that Denmark’s Celsius Shipping could be the owner behind the new order.

Celsius has already four 180,000-cbm vessels on order at Samsung. The firm took delivery of three of these carriers while the fourth will join its fleet later this year.
