GTT wins tank gig for Seaspan’s LNG-powered quintet

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has awarded a new contract to French LNG containment giant GTT.

GTT said in a statement on Monday it would design the tanks for five Seaspan’s 15,000 TEU LNG-powered container vessels.

Following delivery in the third quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, the vessels will go on charter to Israel’s Zim to serve its Asia-US East Coast trade.

To remind, Seaspan and Zim revealed this deal in February this year for a total of ten 15,000 TEU LNG-powered container vessels. In addition, the duo recently also signed a new deal for ten 7,000 TEU LNG-powered container vessels.

Ammonia-ready

The five 15,000 TEU container vessels will each have a tank with a capacity of 12,000 cbm, according to GTT.

Moreover, these tanks would include unique features to facilitate a potential conversion of these vessels to ammonia, the Paris-based firm said.

“The Mark III membrane technology tank has been adapted for compatibility with ammonia, offering both Seaspan and Zim, greater operational flexibility in case of changes in environmental regulations,” GTT said.

In addition to the engineering services and on-site technical assistance, GTT will help with the commissioning of the LNG tank, first bunkering operations, as well as further specific LNG operations and maintenance of the vessels.
