Germany’s NSB reveals LNG-powered containership design

Germany’s NSB Group has developed a new containership concept powered by LNG as it looks to prepare for more sustainable ways of fueling vessels.

The vessel manager said its newbuilding department has developed an LNG-powered 3500 TEU containership with an increased reefer container intake of about 940 FEU.

“The deckhouse on the forecastle deck optimizes the container capacity and separates the accommodation from the IMO Type C LNG tanks, carrying gas for about 5000nm under full reefer load, on the poop deck,” the firm said.

In addition to the LNG tanks, the concept could include an MGO tank as a backup in case of LNG shortage.

Moreover, NSB said the focus of this concept includes reducing gas consumption and the emission of greenhouse gases.

“A modern dual-fuel, 2-stroke, slow speed, single-acting main engine with waste heat recovery system and a battery system for peak shaving combined with a shore power connection propel the vessel into a green future,” the German firm said.

According to its website, NSB currently manages a fleet of 58 vessels. These include containerships, tankers but also bulkers and jack-ups.
