US Coast Guard medevacs mariner from LNG tanker off Corpus Christi

The US Coast Guard says it medevaced a 45-year-old mariner from the 138,000-cbm LNG carrier Iberica Knutsen near the Corpus Christi anchorage, offshore Texas.

“Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders received a call at about 1 a.m. from the 908-foot liquefied natural gas tanker vessel Iberica Knutsen stating a crew member was having difficulty breathing and had collapsed,” the Coast Guard said in a statement on August 5.

According to the statement, “watchstanders consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medical evacuation.”

Moreover, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi had launched to assist.

“The Dolphin crew arrived on scene, hoisted the man and brought him to the Corpus Christi Medical Center Bay Area in stable condition,” the Coast Guard said, but it did not provide any additional information.

Norway’s Knutsen owns the 2006-built Iberica Knusten. Also, the vessel is on a long-term charter to Spanish utility Naturgy.

VesselsValue data shows the laden vessel is on its way to the Sines LNG import terminal in Portugal.
