ABB bags Jansz-Io gig from Chevron

Swiss engineering group ABB has won a contract from Chevron’s unit in Australia to work on the $4 billion Jansz-Io compression project.

ABB said the contract worth about $120 million includes the supply of the overall electrical power system to the Jansz-Io compression (J-IC) project which will help gas recovery at the giant 15.6 mtpa Gorgon LNG project as the offshore field ages.

Under the contract, ABB will provide the majority of the electrical equipment, both topside and subsea.

Moreover, the project will combine two core ABB technologies – power from shore and variable speed drive (VSD) long step-out subsea power – for the first time.

The electrical system will transmit 100 megavolt-amperes over a distance of approximately 140 kilometers and at depths of 1,400 meters, according to ABB.

Also, ABB won the contract following concept development and a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study.

The firm said it would start work immediately while the subsea compression system would go online in 2025.

The Jansz-Io gas field is located around 200 kilometers offshore the north-western coast of Western Australia.

As previously said, the field is a part of the Chevron-operated Gorgon LNG project, one of the world’s largest natural gas developments.

The Gorgon project is a joint venture between the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (47.333 percent), ExxonMobil (25 percent), Shell (25 percent), Osaka Gas (1.25 percent), Tokyo Gas (1 percent) and JERA (0.417 percent).
