Spain’s Enagas and its partners are planning to build a hydrogen plant at the Quintero LNG import terminal in Chile.

Enagas said in a statement it had joined forces with Acciona Energia, a unit of Madrid-based Acciona, and the LNG terminal operator GNL Quintero.

The electrolysis plant in Quintero Bay will be located at the Quintero LNG terminal in which Enagas has a 45.4 percent stake.

It will generate green hydrogen from water and renewable electricity.

The goal of the Quintero Bay green hydrogen project is to offer an alternative source of energy, while contributing to the decarbonization of Chile’s energy matrix and the environmental remediation of the communes of Puchuncaví and Quintero, in the Valparaíso region, according to Enagas.

Moreover, the plant will have a nominal power of 10 MW and an estimated initial production of around 500 t/year.

The partners plan to gradually increase the capacity, depending on the demand created for green hydrogen in the area.

Also, the project has a price tag of about $30 million, Enagas said.
