Samsung Heavy gets DNV OK for ammonia-ready design

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries has received basic design approval from classification society DNV for its ammonia-ready tanker design.

The design would allow owners of very large crude carriers going on LNG or diesel to convert them to run on ammonia in the future, according to Samsung Heavy.

With the approval in principle, the shipbuilder “is speeding up its commercialization by providing effective solutions to shipping companies who are considering building or remodeling ammonia-fueled ships.”

Samsung Heavy received approval in principle from LR in September last year for its ammonia-fueled tanker design.

This gave a boost for the joint development project Samsung Heavy announced with industry partners MISC and MAN Energy Solutions in January 2020. Subsequently, the ammonia-powered tanker project welcomed two new partners – the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Yara International.

SHI will now forge ahead with its development of a relevant fuel gas supply system and detailed ship design.

It aims to commercialize these developments by 2024.
