Gazprom, Rosatom plan Sakhalin hydrogen project

Russian gas giant Gazprom is teaming up with compatriot state nuclear energy firm Rosatom to develop a blue hydrogen project on Sakhalin Island.

The duo and the government of the Sakhalin region signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy, which outlines the main steps for the hydrogen production complex project on Sakhalin Island, according to a Rosatom statement.

Furthermore, the parties intend to cooperate in order to establish hydrogen production on the island of Sakhalin using steam methane reforming with further carbon dioxide capture.

They also plan to supply natural gas to produce the new fuel, and organize a system of product supply to foreign markets and to consumers in the Sakhalin region, the statement said.

Rosatom did not reveal any additional information on the project.

Gazprom already operates the Sakhalin-2 LNG export terminal on the island.

The Sakhalin-2 LNG facility produced and shipped record 11.6 million tonnes of LNG last year. This is equivalent to 178.6 standard cargoes.
