Siem Offshore adds battery power to LNG PSV

Norway-based Siem Offshore said it has upgraded its LNG-powered PSV Siem Symphony with a hybrid battery package as it looks to further reduce emissions.

Westcon’s yard at the Norwegian west coast completed the installation during the second quarter, according to a Siem Offshore statement on Saturday.

Also, classification society DNV has assigned the battery power notation to the vessel.

“We are highly satisfied to see the initial results showing an immediate effect on reducing the vessel’s fuel consumption, subsequently contributing to Lundin Energy Norway’s commitment to minimizing the impact of its marine activities,” Siem Offshore said.

The vessel is on a charter to Lunding Energy and it works on on the Norwegian
Continental Shelf.

With this move, Siem Symphony became the first hybrid vessel in Siem Offshore’s fleet.

It now features a 600 kWh chargeable battery pack that will help the crew to operate the vessel “more efficiently.”

Siem previously said it had expected the vessel to save about 219 tons of fuel annually with battery onboard.

It also said converting an offshore vessel to hybrid power supply may cost 20 million Norwegian Krone ($2.3 million) or more.
