Taiwan’s CPC, TSMC ink carbon-neutral LNG deal

Taiwan’s CPC Corp said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with compatriot Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC) to cooperate on carbon-neutral LNG.

In the future, state-owned CPC would provide carbon-neutral regasified LNG to TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, as the latter looks to further decarbonize its operations, according to a statement.

CPC’s chairman Shun-Chin Lee said that the firm would continue to import carbon-neutral LNG and demonstrate its ambition to face the energy transition.

He added that by providing carbon-neutral natural gas, CPC would help domestic manufacturers meet the decarbonization requirements set by Europe and the US.

Taiwan also has ambitions to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

CPC has previoulsy received several carbon-neutral LNG shipments. These include cargoes from Shell, Eni, and BP.

The firm currently operates two LNG import facilities, namely Taichung and the Yung-An facility in Kaohsiung, but it also plans a third plant in Taoyuan.
