BV OKs Hyundai Heavy’s new ammonia carrier design

Classification society Bureau Veritas has granted approval in principle to South Korea’s shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy for a new ammonia carrier with ammonia-fueled propulsion.

BV said in a statement on Tuesday it awarded the AiP to HHI and its parent KSOE during a ceremony at its Gastech exhibition stand in Dubai.

HHI developed the design to ensure its compatibility with the existing infrastructure for ammonia, while also reflecting the market’s demand for very large gas carriers (VLGCs), according to BV.

The vessel will be 227m long, 36.6m wide, and 23.6m deep – similar dimensions to that of the HHI 91K VLGC design.

Also, it will feature four prismatic-type cargo tanks with a total capacity of 91,000 cubic meters.

BV added that HHI optimized the design for the “safe and efficient carriage of ammonia as a single cargo, thereby maximizing competitiveness for shipowners, both in terms of capex and opex.”
