Wartsila to support Wasaline’s LNG-powered ferry

Finland’s Wartsila has signed a ten-year maintenance agreement for Wasaline’s recently delivered LNG-powered ferry Aurora Botnia.

Wartsila said in a statement the two firms had signed the agreement in June, but it became effective in September.

Finland’s Rauma Marine Constructions handed over the new LNG-powered ferry to compatriot Wasaline last month.

Aurora Botnia will operate the route between Finland’s Vaasa and Umea in Sweden on a daily basis.

The ship’s propulsion is based on a hybrid solution featuring four Wartsila 31DF dual-fuel engines, the firm’s LNG Pac storage solution, and batteries.

It will operate primarily on LNG fuel but will also be able to use bio-LNG.

The maintenance contract includes digital solutions based on artificial intelligence to provide “effective predictive maintenance support and the ability to identify potential faults before they actually happen,” Wartsila said.

According to Wartsila, the vessel would act as a “floating test laboratory” linked to its smart technology hub in Vaasa, allowing real-time operational monitoring.

The 150 meters long ferry has a capacity for 800 passengers and 1500 lane meters for vehicles.
