Naturgy says delivers first carbon-neutral LNG cargo to Spain

Spanish utility Naturgy said it has delivered the first carbon-neutral liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo in Spain.

The 2018-built 178,818-cbm Castillo de Merida brought the shipment to the Enagas-operated Barcelona LNG terminal. The vessel previously loaded the cargo in Qatar, according to a Naturgy statement on Thursday.

Naturgy said it has offset the carbon emissions associated with the LNG cargo from wellhead to discharge terminal.

“The transaction is equivalent to removing 15,300 vehicles from urban traffic over a period of one year,” it said.

Naturgy did not provide any additional information regarding the shipment.

The firm said this “milestone” operation for Spain reinforces the ESG commitment set out in its strategic plan 2021-25.

Also, the utility added it would continue to work with its global customers to offer carbon offsetting services, in order to continue carrying out this type of LNG deliveries in the Spanish energy system and worldwide.
