Italy’s Arcese expanding LNG-powered truck fleet

Italian transport firm Arcese is continuing to add LNG-powered trucks to its fleet as it looks to switch towards alternative fuels in order to reduce emissions.

The firm said it has recently welcomed 25 new Iveco S-Way LNG and bio-LNG vehicles while it continues to convert its fleet to alternative fuels.

“This initiative is in line with European directives, which have set a target of reducing CO2 emissions from commercial vehicle traffic by 30% by 2030,” Arcese said in a statement.

In addition, Arcese says it is one of the first Italian operators to equip these new vehicles with the vulnerable road user (VRU) turning assistance system, thus anticipating a legislative requirement that would come into force in Europe in 2022.

According to the firm, the radar on the vehicles “identifies any obstacles in the intended area and sends an acoustic and visual signal to the driver, warning him/her promptly to avoid any impact.”

Arcese would deploy the new LNG-powered trucks on long-haul routes between Germany and Italy.

Also, the firm plans to further expand its fleet of such vehicles. Today, 16% of the Arcese Group’s fleet consists of vehicles powered by alternative fuels, it said.

Earlier this year, Arcese signed a deal with compatriot fuel distributor Vulcangas to switch from LNG to bio-LNG.

Vulcangas supplied bio-LNG to Arcese’s Iveco truck for the first time on May 27 at a plant in Sommacampagna, near Verona.
