Petronas’ first FLNG ships 50th cargo

Malaysian energy giant Petronas has shipped the 50th cargo from its first floating LNG producer located in the Kebabangan gas field, offshore Sabah.

Petronas loaded the milestone cargo on September 25 from the 1.2 mtpa PFLNG Satu onto the 150,200-cbm Seri Cemara, operated by its unit MISC, for delivery to Taiwan. Its AIS data shows that it should deliver the cargo to CPC’s Yung-An facility in Kaohsiung this week.

The energy major said in a statement on Tuesday the 50th cargo is a “significant achievement” and demonstrates the viability of offshore gas production with FLNG solutions.

It produced the first FLNG cargo from the Kanowit gas field, offshore Sarawak in 2017. PFLNG Satu was also the world’s first FLNG facility to successfully produce LNG from two remote gas fields when it was relocated from the Kanowit gas field to its current location at the Kebabangan gas field, offshore Sabah, in 2019.

“This achievement showcases our leadership in the LNG industry, where we continue to benefit from our first-mover advantage to monetize remote and stranded gas fields with FLNG solutions,” Petronas VP of LNG assets, Abang Yusuf Abang Puteh, said.

“Despite operating in a challenging environment heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic, PFLNG Satu has produced and exported nearly 3.18 million tonnes of LNG from the Kebabangan and Kanowit gas fields since 2017, whilst maintaining high health, safety, security and environment (HSSE) standards,” he said.

Two floating LNG producers in operation

Currently, Petronas is the only energy company in the world that owns and operates two FLNG facilities.

The firm has earlier this year shipped the first cargo from its second floating LNG producer located in the Rotan gas field, offshore Sabah.

With a capacity of 1.5 mtpa, PFLNG Dua arrived at the field in March last year following a long journey from South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

Recent reports also suggest that Petronas has issued a front-end engineering and design tender for a third floating LNG producer, PFLNG Tiga.
