Greece’s BlueFuel in LNG truck deal

BlueFuel will provide liquefied natural gas to what it says is the first LNG-powered tractor in Greece, as part of a deal revealed on Tuesday.

Athens-based Titan Cement purchased the LNG-powered truck to transport cement in Greece. The pilot project is a collaboration with BlueFuel and the Saracakis Group, according to a Titan statement.

The Volvo FH LNG is a truck for heavy regional and long haul transport.

BlueFuel would start supplying LNG to the new vehicle in 2022, the statement said.

An increasing number of owners is opting to use LNG instead of diesel for their trucks in order to slash emissions and costs.

In Europe, the use of LNG in transport is progressing rapidly, mainly in Italy, Germany, France, and Spain.

Greece has still to develop this market but there are plans on the table.

Greece’s Elinoil and compatriot Blue Grid have earlier this year teamed up to create the country’s first LNG fuel supplier for road transport, BlueFuel.

The 50/50 joint venture plans to develop a nationwide network of filling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, enabling the use of LNG as a road fuel in Greece but also the wider region.

BlueFuel has also joined forces with Scale Gas, a unit of Spanish LNG terminal operator Enagas, to build filling stations for trucks in Greece.
