Asian spot LNG price hits new record

Asian spot LNG price surged to $56.326/MMBtu on Wednesday due to the gas price crisis in Europe, according to S&P Global Platts.

The JKM for November rose by $16.655/MMBtu on Wednesday, the highest level for the LNG benchmark for Asian spot LNG since Platts launched it in early 2009. It also marked the largest single-day price rise.

The price broke several records lately on surging European gas prices.

European prices were exerting significant upward pressure on Asia-pacific LNG cargo prices as trading houses and portfolio groups raised their bids to attract volumes into the region, Platts said citing market sources.

December benchmark Dutch TTF gas futures jumped over 40% to hit Eur159.50/MWh ($54.032/MMBtu) at the Singapore market close on October 6. The UK NBP benchmark also increased to $55.182/MMBtu at Asia the close.

These record prices came on the back of Europe’s gas stockpiles being at their lowest levels for the season in over 10 years amid reduced supplies from Russia, Platts said.
