Shell launches new LNG filling station in Germany

Shell said it has opened another LNG retail station for the heavy-duty road transport sector in Germany, as it looks to meet growing demand for the fuel in the country.

This means that LNG-powered trucks can now refuel at seventeen Shell stations in the country, Shell’s German unit said in a statement.

The new German LNG station is located in Thiersheim, Bavaria, near the Czech border.

Moreover, the LNG filling facility can supply up to 150 LNG trucks a day.

Shell Germany said it plans to have in total 25 LNG filling stations by the end of the year and 40 by the end of 2022.

In addition to building filling stations, Shell also aims to boost the use of bio-LNG.

In that regard, the firm announced plans last year to construct a small biomethane liquefaction plant at its Godorf refinery near Cologne.

The plant will have a capacity of about 100,000 tons, supplying Shell’s network of LNG stations by trucks.

Shell Germany said it aims to start construction on the plant by the end of this year, subject to regulatory approvals, and start delivering bio-LNG in 2023.
