Singapore’s first LNG bunkering vessel gets green ship certificate from MPA

Singapore’s first LNG bunkering ship FueLNG Bellina, owned by Keppel Offshore & Marine and Shell, has received the Green Ship certificate from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

FueLNG said its chief Saunak Rai received the certificate last week at the Shipping Registry of Singapore (SRS) Forum.

“Awarded under MPA’s Green Ship Programme, the certificate recognizes the efforts of companies in reducing the environmental impact of their fleet,” FueLNG said.

Organized by MPA, this year’s SRS Forum commemorated the registry’s 55th anniversary and announced the launching of the SRS Notation, a new accreditation system for vessels.

MPA said it has rolled out the new initiative to “recognize ship owners and operators who voluntarily incorporate solutions to drive digital transformation, strengthen cyber security, enhance well-being of seafarers and pursue sustainable shipping.”

To be rolled out on November 1, the SRS Notation covers four categories and is available to ship owners at no additional cost, according to MPA.

Singapore-flagged vessels that fulfil the requirements for each of the categories will get a certificate of recognition and MPA will publish their details on its website to “enhance their commercial attractiveness.”

Moreover, qualifying vessels would receive additional benefits such as a reduction in initial registration fees and rebates on annual tonnage taxes during the qualifying duration, MPA said. The authority plans to introduce these from 2022.

The notation categories include “Smart” notation, “Cyber” notation, “Welfare” notation but also “Green” notation.
