Wartsila to supply shaft generator systems for LNG carrier duo

Finland’s Wartsila has secured a new contract to supply shaft generator systems for two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers currently under construction at South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries.

HHI is building the two vessels for Greek ship management firm Capital Gas Ship Management, Wartsila said.

Wartsila said it has received the new order in August.

“By enabling power take-off, the systems allow the main engine to generate electricity for onboard use, thereby reducing fuel consumption, lowering emission levels, and improving both the vessels Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and future Carbon Intensity index (CII),” Wartsila said.

Each of the two 174,000 cbm capacity vessels will feature two 1.9 MW Wartsila shaft generators.

The tech firm said it would deliver the equipment to the yard in 2022.

To remind, Evangelos Marinakis-led Capital Gas recently took delivery of the sixth in a batch of nine LNG carriers it has on order at HHI.

HHI should deliver LNG carrier Asterix I in January 2023, followed by Amore Mio I in October 2023, and the last LNG vessel in December 2023, according to Capital Gas.
