GTT nets SHI tank contract for six LNG-powered containerships

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries has contracted Paris-based GTT to design tanks for six LNG-powered containerships.

GTT said in a statement each LNG fuel tank would feature its Mark III membrane containment technology “demonstrating that GTT technology is as attractive for mid-size container vessels as for very large ones.”

Samsung Heavy would deliver the vessels between the third quarter of 2023 and the fourth quarter of 2024, GTT said, without revealing the name of the owner.

Besides the engineering services and on-site technical assistance, GTT said it would assist the operator through every step of the LNG-fueled project.

This includes commissioning of the LNG tank, first bunkering operations, as well as further specific operations and maintenance of the vessels.

Moreover, GTT will provide training for the crews, supported by its proprietary G-Sim training simulator, which replicates the future LNG operations of the vessels, but it will also offer its HEARS emergency response service with 24/7 technical assistance.

GTT added it would fit these vessels with its “GTT Digital” platform, a “smart shipping” solution to monitor and optimize the operational performance of the vessels and further reduce their energy consumption and environmental footprint.

This order could be related to an announcement by Samsung Heavy last month.

The yard said then it would build six LNG-powered containerships for an unidentified European owner for about $718 million and deliver them by November 2024.

Sources told LNG Prime that France’s CMA CGM had ordered these six 7,600 TEU vessels.
