Gazprom inks new deals to develop small-scale LNG market in Vietnam

Russian gas giant Gazprom is moving forward with plans to develop the small-scale liquefied natural gas market in Vietnam and has signed two new deals aimed at boosting the use of LNG as a fuel for vehicles in the country.

Gazprom EP International, a unit of Gazprom, said PVGazprom NGV signed the deals earlier this month with Russia’s truck manufacturer Kamaz and transport firm Tretiy Park.

LNG conversion

PVGazprom is a joint venture in which Gazprom EP International holds 71 percent while PetroVietnam Gas holds the rest. Established in 2015, the JV is planning to build a Vietnam-based small-scale LNG complex that would provide fuel for vehicles.

In that regard, PVGazprom NGV has signed a cooperation agreement with Kamaz to develop a “comprehensive proposal for Vietnamese customers to convert vehicles to LNG,” Gazprom EP International said in a statement.

Under the agreement, PVGazprom NGV would provide refueling services while Kamaz would supply vehicles and provide maintenance, it said.

Tretiy Park deal

In addition, PVGazprom NGV also signed heads of agreement for cooperation with Tretiy Park.

The agreement establishes a long-term partnership aiming at joint development of a project under which LNG would be used as fuel for public transport in Vietnam, Gazprom EP International said in a separate statement.

Also, the Russian transport company has already switched its bus fleet from diesel to LNG.

In 2021, Tretiy Park became the first bus fleet in Russia to implement the concept of complete conversion of its vehicles from diesel to NGV, the statement said.

On the other side, Gazprom has this year revealed several new LNG developments in Russia as it continues to boost its small-scale business.

LNG produced at these small-scale developments would mainly end up as fuel for vehicles.
