Wartsila to provide propulsion for McAsphalt’s LNG-powered carrier

Finland’s Wartsila has secured a contract from China’s Wuhu Shipyard to supply propulsion machinery for McAsphalt Marine Transportation’s LNG-powered carrier.

Wuhu revealed this order from Canada’s McAsphalt in May this year. The 11,700-cbm asphalt and oil product tanker will feature dual-fuel propulsion but also a battery pack.

Wartsila said in a statement on Wednesday it had received the order from Wuhu in August, marking the 22nd order placed by the Chinese yard for its propulsion solutions.

The vessel will operate with two Wartsila 20DF dual-fuel engines, as well as the company’s controllable pitch propellers, gearboxes, Energopac rudders, and a Wartsila transverse thruster.

Wartsila expects to deliver the equipment to the yard in December 2022.

The firm said this new contract represents the third order for dual-fuel propulsion systems signed by the two firms this year.

Also, the duo signed a strategic cooperation agreement to work on the research and development of “green energy solutions” in the shipbuilding field, Wartsila said.
