ABB nets contract for Himalaya Shipping’s LNG bulkers

Swiss engineering group ABB said it has secured a contract to supply equipment for Himalaya Shipping’s LNG-powered bulk carriers.

Himalaya Shipping is a new venture of Norwegian businessman and investor, Tor Olav Trøim, who is also the chairman of Golar LNG.

The firm has newbuilding contracts for twelve 208,000-dwt LNG-powered Newcastlemax ships at China’s New Times Shipbuilding in Jiangsu.

ABB said in a statement its equipment package for Himalaya Shipping’s bulk carriers would feature shaft generators with a power-take-off (PTO) solution, comprising new drive systems and permanent magnet technology.

The firm says this would improve the energy efficiency of these vessels by up to four percent while enhancing operational flexibility.

In addition, ABB’s full scope of supply for the vessels also includes low-voltage drives and transformers, as well as engineering, project management and commissioning services.

ABB did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

Bermuda-based Himalaya Shipping has recently raised more cash to fund the construction of these two LNG-powered newbuilds.

Brokers previously said the shipbuilding contracts for the vessels have a price tag of up to $800 million.

New Times should deliver the LNG-powered vessels in 2023 and 2024.
