Jiangnan launches new LNG-powered containership for CMA CGM

China’s Jiangnan Shipyard has launched the fifth 15,000 TEU LNG-powered vessel the yard is building for France’s CMA CGM.

The shipbuilder hosted a launching ceremony for CMA CGM Greenland on November 15.

This vessel is the fifth and the last in this batch of 15,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels.

CMA CGM recently took delivery of Patagonia, the first vessel in this series.

This ship will be followed by CMA CGM Kimberley, Everglade, Galapagos and Greenland.

With a 366 meters length but also 51 meters in width, these containerships will be able to carry up to 15,254 TEUs, including 1,800 reefers, according to the French firm.

They will all sail under the French flag between Asia and the Mediterranean, serving CMA CGM’s Mediterranean Club Express (MEX) route.

CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and expects to have at least 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.

Last week, CMA CGM and compatriot energy firm Engie revealed a deal to work on the industrial-scale production and distribution of synthetic methane and bio-LNG.

The two firms have already partnered on an initial project in the Port of Marseille aimed at creating France’s first bio-LNG production unit.

This project would provide fuel for CMA CGM’s large fleet of LNG-powered containerships as the firm looks to further reduce emissions.
