South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering, a unit of Hyundai Motor Group, and its partners have completed what they say is the world’s largest LNG import terminal in Kuwait.

Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai E&C, and Kogas announced the completion of the 22 mtpa facility operated by Kuwait Petroleum’s unit KIPIC in a statement on Wednesday.

With this, the LNG import facility has started full-scale commercial operations, the statement said.

The consortium led by Hyundai won the construction project valued at $2.93 billion in 2016 from KIPIC.

KIPIC’s regasification facility has a capacity of 130,000 cubic meters of gas per day, as well as eight LNG storage tanks capable of storing 225,000 cubic meters.

Kuwait Petroleum formed KIPIC in 2016 to manage refinery, petrochemicals and LNG import operations in the giant Al-Zour complex.

The Al-Zour complex and the LNG import terminal are located some 90 kilometers south of the capital Kuwait City.

The facility received its first commissioning cargo in July this year from Qatargas, followed by more shipments from Qatar as well.
