Wartsila nets contract for US LNG bunkering barge

Finland’s Wartsila has secured a contract from US-based Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding to supply equipment for NorthStar’s recently ordered LNG bunkering barge.

PNE Marine, an affiliate of NorthStar’s Polaris New Energy, previously executed the shipbuilding agreement with Fincantieri Bay for the new 5,500-cbm ship.

This is a sister vessel to the LNG bunker barge Clean Canaveral, which should start serving Polaris in December. Fincantieri Marine Group’s yard, which is the US division of Italian Fincantieri, recently launched the Clean Canaveral.

In addition to providing the complete LNG cargo storage and handling system for the first LNG bunkering vessel, Wartsila said in a statement it would provide the same equipment for the new barge as well.

The tech firm said it had secured the order in November.

Under the new contract, Wartsila will provide four 1350 cbm insulated LNG cargo tanks, the cargo control system, deepwell pumps, and a ship-to-shore transfer system. It will also deliver a nitrogen generator, all necessary safety equipment and systems, a custody transfer measurement system, and the gas combustion unit.

Wartsila expects deliveries to the yard to start in November 2022.

Besides the equipment scope, Wartsila will also provide the detailed design for the system as well as all necessary integration requirements.
