SWS starts work on U-Ming’s LNG-powered bulker

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding said it has started building a new LNG-powered bulk carrier for Taiwan’s U-Ming.

To mark the construction start for the bulk carrier with a working name H1542, CSSC’s SWS held a steel-cutting ceremony on December 6, the yard said in a statement.

This is the third out of four LNG-powered capesize vessels which will go on charter to mining giant Anglo American.

SWS started building the first two LNG-powered vessels in this batch in October.

The DNV-classed 190,000-dwt dual-fuel dry bulk carriers will be about 299 meters long and 47.5 meters wide.

Furthermore, the vessels will feature MAN Energy Solutions’ high-pressure ME-GI engines.

China’s Gloryholder Liquefied Gas Machinery has also secured a deal earlier this year to supply its LNG fuel system for the four bulk carriers.

The contract includes the design and manufacture of two sets of type C LNG fuel tanks and LNG bunkering stations.

SWS should deliver the vessels in 2023.

Anglo American will use the fleet to carry up to five million tonnes of product per year. The vessels would transport iron ore from Brazil and South Africa to the company’s global customer base, it previously said.
