Hyundai Samho to build three LNG-powered containerships

Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries will build three new LNG-powered containerships as part of a deal revealed on Monday, according to its parent Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

KSOE said that the deal has a price tag of about 418.6 billion won ($351 million).

Also, HSHI would deliver the 7,900 TEU LNG-powered containerships by June 2024 to an unidentified Asian shipowner.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime on Monday that Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping has ordered the ships as it continues to build a huge fleet of LNG-powered vessels.

The three containerships would feature MAN ME-GI propulsion and GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane system, one source said.

Besides this order for the containerships, KSOE also said that it has won an order for two petrochemical carriers from an unidentified shipper in Asia.

The total price tag for these five ships reached 510 billion won ($428 million), KSOE said.

These orders follow several contracts KSOE revealed this month, including for two LNG carriers and LNG-powered containerships. All of the orders for 24 ships total about $2.9 billion.

KSOE has set a target for this year of $17.4 billion, compared to $14.9 billion last year. The shipbuilder and its three units have secured in total $22.8 billion worth of orders during 2021.
