Wartsila to supply engines for seven LNG-powered Arctic shuttle tankers

Finland’s Wartsila said it has won a contract from South Korea’s Samsung Heavy to supply engines for seven LNG-powered Arctic shuttle tankers.

Wartsila said in a statement the deal has a price tag of more than 100 million euros ($113.4 million). The tech firm won the order in December.

According to the statement, the vessels would each feature six Wartsila 31DF dual-fuel main engines operating primarily on LNG fuel, and two Wartsila 20 harbor engines.

In addition, all of the vessels would feature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for emissions abatement, it said.

The 120,000-dwt vessels are Arc 7 classified and have ice-breaking capability.

Wartsila plans to start delivering the equipment to SHI’s yard in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Also, SHI should start commissioning the vessels between 2024 and 2027, it said.

The yard revealed this order in October last year saying it would deliver blocks, parts, and designs for the seven LNG-powered vessels for about $1.7 billion.

Brokers reported that the vessels would serve Rosneft. SHI is working on this project with Russia’s Zvezda, such as for the ice-class Arc7 carrier fleet for Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project.

Last year, a unit of Wartsila secured a contract to deliver radio and integrated navigation systems for ten ice-breaking tankers that will serve Arctic LNG 2.

Wartsila is also working on this project in partnership with SHI.
