Novatek opens Russian small-scale LNG plant

Russian independent LNG producer Novatek launched on Wednesday the first small-scale LNG plant in the Chelyabinsk region.

The plant located in Magnitogorsk in the southern Urals has a capacity of 40 thousand tons per year.

Additionally, Novatek-Chelyabinsk will operate the facility while Russian cryogenic tech firm JSC NPO Geliymash supplied the equipment.

Novatek’s unit will primarily sell LNG produced at the facility as fuel for vehicles, a growing business for the producer.

This includes for passenger cargo transport and mining equipment in Chelyabinsk and the neighboring areas.

Russian billionaire businessman and Novatek’s CEO Leonid Mikhelson said the firm strongly supports the use of LNG as a motor fuel.

Furthermore, he said that this represents a promising market segment Novatek is actively developing both in Russia and abroad.
