Hyundai Mipo wins orders for LNG bunkering ship, LNG-powered vessels

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo has secured orders from European owners for one LNG bunkering vessel and two LNG-powered ships.

Including six small container vessels, Hyundai Mipo won orders won nine ships worth 704 billion won ($584 million), according to parent Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

Euroseas said on Wednesday it ordered two small 2,800-teu feeder ships at Hyundai Mipo for about 85 million while an unknown Oceania-based owner ordered the other four container vessels.

Hyundai Mipo will build one 12,500-cbm LNG bunkering vessel for about 72.9 billion won ($60.4 million) and deliver it to an unidentified European owner by the first quarter of 2024.

The bunkering vessel will have 133 meters in length and 22.3 meters in width and it will also feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion.

As per the two LNG-powered ships, Hyundai Mipo will deliver these vessels to an unidentified owner in Europe as well by May 2025.

These two 24,000-ton LNG dual-fuel RoRo vessels cost about 321.9 billion won ($267 million).

Also, they will measure 234 meters in length and 35 meters in height.

CLdN confirms order for two vessels

Last year, Hyundai Mipo delivered the first LNG-powered RoRo to Luxembourg-based CLdN.

Hyundai Mipo said the vessel named Faustine was the first such ship built in Korea.

European short sea specialist CLdN ordered Faustine but also a sister vessel at Hyundai Mipo back in 2019.

CLdN said in a statement on Thursday it has ordered two new 8,000 lane meter hybrid RoRo vessels at Hyundai Mipo.

“The order represents the largest investment in CLdN’s history and is a result of two years of intense engineering and development together with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard,” it said.

The new ships will feature two LNG dual-fuel ME-GI main engines of 11MW each as well as two electric propulsion motors of 6MW each.

In full electric mode, the ships can achieve a cruising speed of 16 – 17kn, it said.
