Germany’s MAN secures 100 orders for ME-GA engines

Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions said it has received 100 orders for its ME-GA dual-fuel engine since introducing it to the market last year, all for LNG carriers.

After a live demonstration at the Research Centre Copenhagen in March 2021, the company started receiving orders for the dual-engine, securing 40 orders just last year.

According to MAN, the low-pressure ME-GA two-stroke dual-fuel engine delivers a low CAPEX solution that is suitable for vessels such as LNG carriers.

The new engine is an Otto-cycle variant of the company’s ME-GI engine. It’s also inherently Tier II and Tier III compliant in gas-operation mode.

In addition, MAN offers the engine with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) to fully utilize its dual-fuel potential in Tier III areas.

The firm expects the engine to become a standard in the LNG market.

In July, Bjarne Foldager, SVP and head of two-stroke business at MAN, said the company experienced “overwhelming” interest from shipowners, shipyards, engine builders, and charterers in ME-GA since its virtual launch.

At the same time, the firm revealed that Hyundai Heavy Industries had placed the first order for its new dual-fuel engine for six 174,000-cbm LNG carriers which would go on charter to a unit of Shell.
